I get that reboots often pale in comparison to originals, but there's that and then there's this. I felt like I was watching a Lifetime movie, which would have been good... if this was an actual Lifetime movie. This was supposed to be many levels above a Lifetime movie, but it definitely didn't exceed the expectations of one. This movie was dead from the moment it started.

Some remakes make sense, even if only to reinterpret an idea or offer a new perspective. This is not one of them. There’s no fresh angle here, no real reason to revisit the story. What we get instead is a hollow copy, a diluted version of something that already worked perfectly and never needed to be touched. The main problem lies in the script. It lacks internal logic, fails to build genuine tension, and makes decisions that feel completely arbitrary. Character motivations shift whenever the plot needs them to, and twists don’t grow organically from the story but from a forced need to seem intense. Everything moves forward awkwardly, without emotional or narrative coherence, making it hard to stay engaged. Comparisons with the original are unavoidable, and this version loses on every front. The earlier film worked because it understood suspense, ambiguity, and gradual unease. Here, there’s no real mystery, no lasting threat, none of that creeping discomfort that slowly got under your skin. What once was tension is now just noise. Not even the performances, which in another context might have helped, manage to save the film. There is talent on screen, but it’s trapped in material that gives the actors nothing solid to build on. Characters never feel fully real, and the final act closes the story in a clumsy, empty way. Visually, it offers nothing memorable. Flat, functional, and forgettable, it feels more like content made to fill a catalog than a film with something to say. An unnecessary, disappointing remake that adds nothing and diminishes what came before.

The massages: - family is bad - children don't need parents - adults screwed up children It only focused on: - profit - sexuality - women are stronger than men Additional note: - miscasting is so bad in this film - unnecessary racial campaign - unnecessary sexuality Don't waste time and money, skip it. It's bad for your brain, bad for your faith, bad for your mental health. Another unwanted remake.

I watched this movie entirely because of Maika Monroe who I feel is extremely talented despite being often relegated to horror movies only. This movie isn't exactly horror, and while I recognize it is a remake, it also feels very familiar to other movies within this genre. I think you can more or less predict high level plot beats, but the movie spends a lot of time before the shoe finally drops. I think I personally got antsy waiting for it to finally get to the point, and I don't think anything this movie will be doing will feel particularly new or innovative, often times feeling a bit soapy instead of really standing out amongst the rest of the movies in this genre. I do think the plot had potential to go beyond these trappings, but it just takes way too long to go to those interesting places. It does get kind of fun at the end where the movie has no issue becoming slightly campy and over the top. The real draw of this movie is the acting. Maika Monroe is excellent as usual, but I actually was surprised by Mary Elizabeth Winstead who I did not recognize at all. Both play off each other really well, and they oscillate between campy and grounded really well. I think they make this movie a lot more interesting than it really was, and it's a shame that the script could not support them. Also, if you are into interior design, this movie has a lot of shots and focus on that for some reason. Overall, it didn't feel like a waste of time because of the actresses, but it did feel like it wasted the talent of the actresses.
