Maharashtra is considered the region with the highest suicide rate in India. In December 2023, the regional government reported 2,366 suicides between January and October alone. Most of them are collateral victims of global warming, low prices and speculation around agriculture, and in many cases they take their lives by ingesting the same pesticides that have caused them into unbearable debt. But the director is not so interested in analyzing the socioeconomic environment of these deaths, but rather he focuses his gaze on the reality experienced by widows who have lost their husbands early, but also their main breadwinner. Although the very reality that he describes and the darkness indicated in its title may reflect a sense of regret, it is a film that is committed to hope and light, trying to highlight the positive aspects. Taking as reference the compositions of the work of photographer Sebastião Salgado (1944, Brazil), a balance of chiaroscuro is established in a documentary that is moving at some moments and hopeful at others.
