[Sheffield '24] The directors construct the portrait of a singer who could have succeeded and the mystery of her disappearance from archive images, animation, interviews with those who knew her and a telephone interview with Jackie Shane herself a year before his death. The documentary unfolds at a good pace, mixing interviews and rotoscope animation recreations in which Sandra Caldwell plays Jackie Shane on stage. Some speculations from interviewees who didn't know her may be unnecessary, including the niece who received her inheritance, but this is compensated by the strong personality of a singer who reflected a sad disappointment in the first sentence of her manuscript: "I was born, but I have never lived."
