It is one of the most pleasant and beautiful love stories I have ever watched: This film won the Silver Bear at the prestigious 2000 Berlin International Film Festival and the World Cinema Audience Award at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. The victories were even sweeter for director Zhang Yimou, who had his film The Road Home immediately rejected at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival, which led Zhang to withdraw his other film, Not One Less, from the competition. The Road Home is considered one of the best Chinese films of all time. The plot, characters, soundtrack, setting—everything blends together in a delightful and harmonious Chinese production. More than just a drama, it is a period love story, beautiful and well-told. Simply magical!
