Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. flying small planes for the CIA during the Vietnam War while trafficking opium. Sounds crazy, and it is, but the movie doesn't quite know what to do with all that potential. The problem is the tone. It wants to be a buddy action comedy while also touching on serious topics like military corruption and institutionalized drug trafficking. But it can't balance anything. One moment you're laughing at the pilots' antics and the next civilians are dying, and the transition is so clumsy it takes you out of the story. Gibson does Gibson, with his usual smile and charisma. Downey Jr. is in nervous-chatty mode that he would later perfect in other movies. Together they have chemistry, but the script doesn't give them enough material to shine.
Fun action adventure with a great cast.
