A more on-brand sequel to Starship Troopers. This one recaptures a bit of the cynicism towards the military (even while making a military man its hero) that was so prevalent in the first movie. The military industrial complex is at it once again, oppressing people, using the war with the bugs as an excuse. Peace protestors are hanged publicly to dissuade any criticism of the war. Even religion is prohibited by the military at the start of the movie lest it might detract from its claim of supremacy. In this climate, the very popular Supreme Admiral's ship is shut down in a bug-dominated planet --- and yet he and his entourage are minimally bothered. The hero of the movie is dispatched in a secret mission of rescue along with 6 other troopers. It is eventually revealed that the Supreme Admiral has been under the influence of the brain bug captured at the end of the first film, and that he betrayed humanity in order to achieve union --- and peace for humanity -- with the gigantic, planetary-big "god" of the bugs who lives in the planet where he was shot down and whom he himself regards as God. In the end: two women from the Supreme Admiral's personal guard are rescued. The Admiral himself is eaten by the "god" bug. The "god" bug was nuked with a planet killer Q-bomb. And the army cynically decides that religion is a good thing after all, that the one and only Supreme God --- who does exist after all --- loves humanity, hates the bugs and peace-nick traitors, and that wants humanity to triumph in their war against the bugs. I enjoyed the return of the cynicism of the first movie. The plot of this film was mildly interesting --- certainly more interesting than the second one. The actual film left much to be desired in terms of acting performance and coherence. And the final big bad weapon introduced in this move --- exoskeleton armored suits ---- was artificially bolstered while actually seeming rather humdrum. Overall, not as bad as the second one, but nowhere near the greatness of the first one.
Like the second one, this one is just bad. Once the initial movie was brilliant. This is crap.
Starship Troopers 3: Marauder is a return to the B-movie camp of the original, but the talent’s not there to pull it off. The Bug War continues as Col. Johnny Rico is charged with a top secret mission to save a stranded crew that’s stuck on a bug world. Casper Van Dien returns and is joined by Jolene Blalock, but their performances are uneven and aren’t able to pull off the same cheesiness that made the original so fun. Additionally, the special effects are atrociously bad and drag the whole film down. While nothing is done particularly well in Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, it’s still able to provide some interesting satire that’s mildly entertaining at times.
