[7.5/10] I first watched this film with my 4th-grade classmates about 25 years ago. I remember being completely entranced by it, and it stayed with me over the years. I’d think about it from time to time, wondering what it was called or if it was even real. Finally tracking it down to watch again has been such a thrill, and I’m happy to say it’s just as delightful as I remembered. What stood out most to me was how the film captured the kids’ thought processes. Their decisions—while not entirely safe—were driven by curiosity and an eagerness to learn and experience something new. It felt so authentic to how children think and act. And I loved that even as things began to unravel, their determination to see their adventure through to the end never wavered. Despite the trouble they caused, it would be hard to fault them when considering their efforts and intent. This movie really feels like it was made purely to entertain children, without any concessions to adult appeal—something very rare. Everything works out for these kids, sometimes in ways that feel realistic and other times with almost magical luck. To truly enjoy this movie, I think it’s important to watch with a sort of dreamer's mindset. It’s not meant to be nitpicked—it’s a film made for children (and anyone intrigued by mystery), meant to inspire and spark imaginations. And it certainly did that for me, both as a child and now as an adult revisiting it.
