A classic film from the story of Roald Dahl. Love Rowan Atkinson in this, and Anjelica Huston is amazing!
Not what I was expecting but I had fun. The witch makeup is great and the mouse stuff didn't look terrible.
A wicked little children's chiller. Holds up surprisingly well, with great great effects from Jim Henson. One of the better Roald Dahl adaptations, even with the cop-out ending. May be too scary for the really little ones though...
I really don't care much for Roald Dahl, but at least I can say with certainty that the first film adaptation of “The Witches” is significantly better than the second. The 1990 film has its charm, primarily due to the excellent practical effects. However, the film takes quite a while to get going. In particular, the gathering of the witches relatively early on feels like it lasts forever. Later, when we follow the escapades of the two boys who have been turned into mice, it becomes more entertaining and even funny in places. The ending is a bit watered down, though, so I can only give it a mild recommendation. But if you have to choose between the 1990 and 2020 films, it's a no-brainer.
