If you go into this expecting something like The Martian or Interstellar, you will be disappointed. This is nothing like a typical sci-fi film, even though on paper it should have all the ingredients of a serious sci-fi story. It has the typical "save the Earth" stakes, the scientific problem that has to be solved, but somehow, it manages to come off as unserious and oddly shallow. Instead of tension, action and complexity, we get to see a Pixar-like bromance between Ryan Gosling and an alien 3D rock filled with playful, hopeful, emotionally safe dialogue, which makes you question whether you are watching a sci-fi movie or a kids movie. Gosling comes across as an insufferable man-child, the rock thing looks weird and is annoyingly hard to connect to, and aside from the central duo the rest of the cast barely registers: they might as well be called "Generic Scientist #2921". I'm pretty sure a 13-year-old would love this. To me as an adult it felt insulting by how watered-down it is. It seems like they stripped out a lot of the science in the book, anything scientific is explained quickly and cleanly, which removes a lot of the complexity and tension one would expect from such a movie. If you enjoyed this , please feel free to comment and explain what I missed in this movie, I'd love to hear others thoughts on this.
As one might say out there in space, this film was 👎 .
Project Hail Mary has a great premise, the visual effects are clean, and the production design is strong. However, I found the tone to be too playful for what the material needs. A story with stakes this large should feel more serious, more urgent, and more grounded. Instead, the film keeps reaching for humor and lightness in ways that undercut its own impact. Rocky is loveable, but he feels less like a believable alien presence and more like an engineered crowd pleaser. The film needs you to invest in that relationship, but I never believed it enough to fully buy in. The movie is a clever, lighthearted, and entertaining sci-fi, but it fails to hit with enough force to leave a lasting mark.
how the heck that movie got such a high score?! it's an absurd, from the story, to the acting and realization of the whole project. it felt like a kids movie
Absolutely phenomenal. Smart, funny, and visually stunning. Currently my favorite movie of the year. This is a perfect example of a movie should be seen on the big screen. 👎👎 Highly Recommend
