With this season, I've finally learned to just accept that Robert Kirkman is a hack writer/showrunner and that the first season of Invincible was a complete fluke of success, brought on by a different assembly of writers and experienced industry veterans. Now that he's had the reins in his hands since Season 2, all his flaws are showing unfiltered. It's even worse since all the episodes have such insane lengths and expensive budgets but end up delivering such mediocrity. It's no longer comic-adapted television like in Season 1. It's now poorly written episodic adventures with misallocations to their already overblown resources. A loose script, poor animation, filler content, unfocused characters, and a bunch of tropes/cliche elements (even though it's supposed to be genre-subversive)... All in trade of what? Expensive recognizable actors (that aren't even voice acting), a ton of unnecessary licensed music, and 50 minute runtimes? This show could do so much better if they focus on the quality of writing, stop indulging Kirkman's excessive additions, and give the show an actual animation director. The Invincible "formula" is still here but it doesn't feel like they're making an effort anymore. It's completely missing the tight-knit focus that the first season had, from what I can only assume is due to a lack of proper constraints and refusing to tell Kirkman, "no."

Season 4 of Invincible might be its strongest season yet. Throughout its back half, every moment is loaded with tension and stakes, both at a global level as well as at the individual character level, leading to moments of incredible emotional depth as well as thematic relevance. Episode 7 in particular is probably the best Invincible has ever been, and the animation often reflects that level of quality. This season pushes multiple characters to the brink, building up to an event that has been brewing for so many seasons now. Honestly, the only flaw for this season is its first half which sometimes feels disjointed and at times even like filler until the main arc of the season kicks in. I think that one of the episodes might actually be one of the weakest in the entire show. It's easy to overlook that since the quality is so backloaded, but I would love to see Invincible cut some of its fat out. The 8-season plan could probably have been done slightly more efficiently in my opinion. This is a minor complaint overall though because I still think the back half redeems this season in spectacular fashion.

Just like season 3: weak start, strong end. At least they keep their budget to the last episodes where it'll hit harder, but I wish the quality was more consistent across the season.
