The story of Beautiful Rain is incredibly pleasant, beautiful, and subtle; however, I expected a stronger melodramatic punch. The emotional weight of this drama leaves a bit to be desired. Keisuke's young daughter (played by Mana Ashida) is adorable and put on a great performance, with scenes that genuinely test the viewer's emotions. On the other hand, the father, Keisuke (Etsushi Toyokawa), despite acting well, feels somewhat expressionless—the character was clearly weighed down by that characteristically Japanese reserve and seriousness, which is a shame, as it could have easily ranked among the best dramas. The soundtrack and cinematography are absolutely wonderful, and the cozy, dramatic atmosphere the show conveys with each episode is splendid. All in all, Beautiful Rain is a wonderful family melodrama, beautifully written with a solid, well-paced timeline. A great piece of work!
