What a twisted little number. Sometimes a little hit and miss but overall it's great.

When the episode hits right, man it's a perfect 20 minutes. When it's completely out there and just not funny, it really falls flat. Overall though, a solid animation with some very dark ideas at times.

The show ran as long as it had to to build its world and make its point - short and sweet. I still think it's great.

I have to admit, with animated series and comedies, I always find it relatively difficult to write a proper review because many components that series usually have, such as cinematography, acting, dramaturgy, story, etc., are often missing or only present in a weakened form. First and foremost, however, I can say that I really enjoyed "Ugly Americans." A metropolis where virtually every imaginable culture and creature collides is a truly creative and intelligently chosen setting, as it opens up almost limitless possibilities for storytelling. I also personally really liked the humor of the series. Normally, you don't really "laugh" when watching something alone—the most you can elicit in that situation is a sudden, sharp exhale through the nostrils. But "Ugly Americans" had me laughing out loud more than once with a joke. The absurd combination of everyday comedy, pop culture references, and occasional social commentary is simply brilliant. Sex is also a major part of the show's repertoire of gags. I can't recall an episode that didn't contain at least one sexual innuendo or joke. It might seem like the show is using these jokes to constantly remind viewers that it's an "adult" show, but personally, I think you get used to it quickly, and somehow it fits perfectly into the overall atmosphere of the series. I also found the detailed animation and art style very appealing. Unfortunately, with only 31 episodes, the series is relatively short, as it fell victim to declining viewership and a restructuring at Comedy Central. I would have loved to see more, especially since there's clearly so much more potential here...
