This was an insane watch. Slowly diving deeper into what it means to 'perform' ever since being a child. What that rhetoric does to someones view of the world and influences their actions. Business and family get mixed, plus a huge power imbalance due to age and family relations add the total disrespect for boundaries, sa, always having to perform and millions of eyes watching this mess and you get kidfluencers.
I was always subconsciously aware of what was going on with Piper Rockelle but didn't know the true extent of things. However after having seen this I can tell you that I do not feel an ounce of sympathy for these parents cause although they might not have been aware of the true extent of the sexual and emotional abuse their children were being subjected to I think there were enough red flags for them to have at least have had some idea but they were all clueless.
When I see documentaries like this, I get really frustrated with the interviewed parents acting like they either didn’t know what was going on or didn’t know any better. Did they even pay attention to the videos their kids posted? Yes there was one ring leader, but the other parents were definitely turning a blind eye to everything going on. I had never heard of any of these influencers and I’m so glad that my kids have never heard of them either.
Im bout half way through the first ep and all i see is cringe. I dont really care to know who is the victim here but seeing how Piper acts, it's clear she loves the attention and being famous regardless whether her mother was the biggest push or not, Piper loved the attention. Her contents that they have shown so far are 'silly and cringey' but that is what is wrong with the world today, stuff like this gets more attention than documentaries that could educate you, but noooo people watch stuff like that and bring people like her to fame. Same goes to music, music went to shit because good music are never as well appreciated as what u call 'rap' or 'gibberish' anymore, it's sad to see the world regressing like this. ♀With that said, (i am going off track XD) im not gonna finish this show, im not gonna give her stories more views even on netflix LOL
So-called Kidfluencing is an important and underreported topic. However, in Bad Influence, the producers and director are equally as exploitive and voyeuristic as any other participant in this ugly world. It became increasingly uncomfortable as the series drew to a close, with ex-Squad members droning on and on about "Piper being the first victim," while the episode couldn't cram in enough Piper footage. I found myself fast-forwarding through scenes, where the same point was grinding away, just to pick up at the same "insight" several minutes later. Much of the montage editing had a frenetic, internet-y quality that, taken together with the thin and repetitive interviews, left me thinking that the only reason for stretching the material into a 3-part series was to pump out more Piper content. A plain cracker for conveying slathered foie gras into our collective maw. Don't get me wrong, the kid is in a horrendous environment, and an intervention is probably necessary. But this isn't a thoughtful expose meant for reflection and action; rather, it's a dull lecture jamming images into our eyeballs a la Clockwork Orange.
