The American Revolution was at once a war for independence, a war of conquest, a civil war, and a world war, fought by neighbors on American farms and between global powers an ocean or more away. It impacted millions from Vermont’s Green Mountains to the swamps of South Carolina, from Indian Country to the Iberian Peninsula. In defeating the British Empire and giving birth to a new nation, the American Revolution turned the world upside-down. Thirteen colonies on the Atlantic Coast united in rebellion, won their independence, and established a republic that still endures. The American Revolution will present the story of the men and women of the Revolutionary generation, their humanity in victory and defeat, and the crisis that they lived through.

From Ken Burns comes the fascinating 6-part documentary series _The American Revolution_. The series follows the events that lead to the thirteen American colonies declaring independence, the major events of the conflict that grew into a world war between various European powers, and the aftermath. Peter Coyote serves as narrator, and Tom Hanks, Josh Brolin, Edward Norton, Mandy Patinkin, Paul Giamatti, Claire Danes, Laura Linney, and Jeff Daniels voice the letters and journals of various historical figures. Additionally, numerous historians are interviewed and discuss the people and events of the Revolution. Also, the series makes a concentrated effort to un-whitewash history by following the dozens of America Indian tribes who joined the conflict, on either the Patriot or Loyalist side depending on their interests, as well as the enslaved and free blacks who joined the Patriot and Loyalist forces to earn their freedom or to seek their fortunes. In fact, at times it seems overly concerned with this aspect to the determent of others that are either downplayed or ignored. Still, _The American Revolution_ is an incredibly comprehensive and compelling documentary.
