After informing on fellow police officers for assaulting an alleged rapist, Grace Narayan is posted as a sergeant to the small Welsh island of St Jory, where she begins investigating the disappearance of a local boy named Cai. Along the way, Grace uncovers local secrets and suspects the involvement of a pagan cult named True Way, which the islanders claim no longer exists.

The series delves into the realm of mystery and then turns to philosophical questions about the meaning of justice, but also to reflections on how isolation causes distortions of reality, wrapped in pagan doctrines that somehow misinterpret the meaning of impartiality. At one point in the series, a kind of trial is held by popular vote that will decide the survival or death of the condemned, turning the story into an exercise in terror that represents how beliefs shape human relationships.
