I'd argue it's one of the 5 best shows ever made. The humor and references are hysterical and the mythology never stops growing. Go Team Venture!
Useful video explanation of what show is about (functionally a "trailer): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lDkntn2W5k Warning: It's a recap of Seasons 1-4 so contains spoilers. However, you can watch the first 1:30 or 2:00 of it to get the backstory, main character bios, and gist of the show, as I did, without seemingly spoiling too much.
hey just so everyone knows season 5 starts june 2nd!!!
"The Venture Bros." is a series that is both funny and complicated. In addition to the simple comedy, the series offers a sophisticated story, detailed world building and well thought-out characters. The series becomes relatively difficult to watch at some point because you are never sure whether you have to pay attention to understand the story or whether you can sit back and enjoy the comedy. I still really appreciate the idea and uniqueness of the series - it was something different. A healthy mix of comedy, action and drama - I would recommend the series, for people who yearn for something new.
The Venture Bros. is one of Adult Swim’s crown jewels—a show that started as a parody of old-school adventure cartoons like Jonny Quest, but quickly evolved into something far more ambitious, emotionally grounded, and unexpectedly rich in worldbuilding. What began as a silly, irreverent riff on pulpy hero tropes became a long-running epic about failure, legacy, and the absurdity of identity. At its core, The Venture Bros. is hilarious. The show is packed with clever dialogue, ridiculous character names, deep-cut pop culture references, and endless callbacks. The humor ranges from slapstick to dry wit to sharp satire, often layered together in the same scene. But what makes the show special is that it doesn’t settle for just making fun of genre conventions—it builds a fully realized world that somehow makes all the nonsense feel grounded. The Venture family—Dr. Rusty Venture and his twin sons, Hank and Dean—start out as caricatures of classic cartoon families. But over time, each of them is given complexity, flaws, and weird emotional arcs that are as touching as they are absurd. Supporting characters like Brock Samson, the Monarch, Dr. Girlfriend, and dozens of others develop into some of the most interesting and memorable characters in adult animation. Everyone in this universe is a failure in their own way, clinging to costumes, obsessions, and inherited legacies, trying to make sense of lives that never turned out how they wanted. The worldbuilding is some of the best in animation. With each season, the show's lore deepens: there are secret societies, super-science organizations, villain licensing systems, and tangled family histories that somehow all make sense in their own chaotic way. Though the show was never released on a consistent schedule, and often left fans waiting for years between seasons, the quality never dropped. Its finale in 2023 gave satisfying closure while staying true to its unique tone. A brilliant blend of parody, pathos, and pop-culture madness. 9/10.
