In the 1920s, the innocent Marina marries the wealthy widower Roberto Steen. Struggling to adapt to a life of luxury, she has to contend with her husband's adoration for Alice, his first wife.

Miguel proposes to Marina. Lopes tells Emília that Roberto Steen is interested in her land. Roberto Steen stays at the farm and catches Marina's eye.
