As brilliant and enveloping as the book series is, this tv adaptation unfortunately falls extremely short. Anyone trying to watch this would have to have read the book or 90% of the show would make little to no sense. Had they had another 6 episodes to flesh this out, or made each episode an hour long that could have helped a lot. Set design is great, characters are all perfectly played, special effects are few and far between.

In the vein of so many other stories where a young adult stuck in a mundane life suddenly finds a secret world, this is a fantasy that I think is worthwhile watching. There are some great characters (my favourites being the sadistic brothers Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemaar) all set in London Below, a city that is not visible to normal folks. It's not startling, special affects are rare, but you can tell it is based on a good story, and it comes from a time when the BBC made some interesting stuff.
