_The Mighty_ is a heartfelt drama that manages to be both tender and uplifting without slipping into cheap sentimentality. At its core, it’s a story about an unlikely friendship between two boys — Kevin, struggling with a terminal illness, and Max, burdened with learning difficulties. What makes the film work so well is the balance: neither boy is reduced to a stereotype or a source of pity. Their bond feels authentic, built on shared imagination, loyalty, and the comfort they bring each other in facing life’s cruelties. The film cleverly frames their friendship through the lens of Arthurian legend. This recurring motif of knights and quests adds a layer of magic, turning what could have been a bleak story into something almost mythic. The real world is often harsh, yet through their shared fantasy, Kevin and Max transcend their limitations, becoming heroes in their own right. That fairytale element is what gives the film its staying power. Performances are outstanding, particularly from Kieran Culkin and Elden Henson, whose chemistry makes the story believable and touching. Their dynamic elevates the film far beyond its simple premise. Supporting performances and the carefully chosen soundtrack deepen the emotional pull without overwhelming it. _The Mighty_ works for children, offering adventure and heart, but also for adults, with its layered themes of acceptance, courage, and love. I first saw it as a child, and rewatching it years later, it still carries that same quiet magic. It’s not flawless, but its sincerity makes it unforgettable.
Probably one of the few "Must watch" movies out there
A heartwarming story about an unusual friendship between a slightly retarded boy and a boy with a terminal illness. They decide to face the world together, thus overcoming their respective weaknesses. Very well made movie with excellent acting performances.
"You are my brain and I'm your legs" The film was heartwarming & beautiful with a great imagination and decent cast that all did well and also a good sense of humour. Freak The Mighty!
This one has been sitting on my top20 for as long as I can remember, and it doesn't look like it's going to be leaving anytime soon. All hail the best Christmas film ever made!
