It's a film where faith and spirituality is at the center. The invasion happens in the background. If Silence bored you and you prefer fast paced, violent Marty, then this will bore you. I thought it was a masterpiece. Makes a great double feature with The Last Emperor?
I thought this was kind of a bore, the story never really grabbed me. Technically it looks pretty good. I would probably never of watched this if Scorsese didn't direct it.
If you had just told me that this was a Martin Scorsese film, I don't think I'd have believed you. I think I hated just about everything in this. The primary issue, is that you really need to have done your Tibet history homework before turning this on. I went into it hoping to get a deeper understanding of the Dali Lama backstory and culture. What I got instead was constant confusion about what the hell was going on. Who are all these people? What is their relationship? Why are they acting this way? I don't know. Outside of the plot, the tech side of this sucks too. Nothing about the cinematography stands out as interesting. In fact, there is one shot through a telescope that looks terrible to me. I guess that is technically interesting. Then the score bores the hell out of me. It gets sooooo redundant. Good thing this was over 2 hours of great entertainment.
