In their hands, a deck of cards was the only thing more dangerous than a gun.
Bret Maverick is a gambler who would rather con someone than fight them, and needs an additional $3k in order to enter a winner-takes-all poker game beginning in a few days. He joins forces with a woman with a marvelous Southern accent, and the two try and enter the game.

Hard to know which makes me feel older - watching Westerns, or watching a time when Mel Gibson was known for being a good actor. This was a fun old movie, and I feel bad to say I quite enjoyed as brainless entertainment
Full of a lot of gambling, cons, twists and double crosses. The cast makes it a lot of fun as well.
I like this version of Mel Gibson. Wish he didn't become a degenerate. Entertaining comedy. Just perfect to unwind after a long week.
A well made western-comedy with an excellent cast. Just good entertainment.
Adapted from the hit ‘50s television series, _Maverick_ is a fun and exciting western from director Richard Donner. On his way to the All River’s Draw Poker Championship professional card player Bret Maverick gets into a series of misadventures while trying to collect the last three thousand dollars of his entry fee. Starring Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Alfred Molina, and James Garner, the film has a great cast that delivers some really good performances. And the comedy is lighthearted and campy in all the right ways (without being too cute or slapsticky). Also, the fight scenes and chases are energetic and action-packed. A film that the whole family can enjoy, _Maverick_ is entertaining and delivers a lot of laughs.
