A rusty sub. A rebel commander. A renegade crew. When destiny called, they should have hung up.
Maverick Navy Lieutenant Commander Tom Dodge will never be a textbook officer, but he's a brilliant seaman who's always wanted to command a nuclear submarine — he's been given one last chance to clean up his record. Unfortunately, Admiral Graham, his nemesis, would rather sink the fleet than give Dodge his own boat. So, Graham stacks the deck against him and assigns Dodge to the Stingray, a diesel-powered WW2 submarine that can barely keep afloat. To make matters worse, Dodge's crew is a collection of maladjusted, mistake-prone misfits. Then, he's tagged the "enemy" in a crucial war game, and ordered to take on the U.S. Navy's best.

Set sail for hilarity with the goofball comedy Down Periscope. When the Navy schedules a series of war games to see if a rogue vessel could breach their defenses, Lt. Cmdr. Tom Dodge is assigned an antiquated diesel sub and given a ragtag crew of misfits to attempt the impossible. Starring Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Holly, Rob Schneider, Bruce Dern, and Rip Torn, the film has a good cast that’s well suited for this style of slapstick humor. Still, the comedy gets a little too cartoonish at times and goes overboard with the silly antics of this pirate-esque group of sailors. But overall, most of the jokes work and deliver a boat load of laughs. While it can be juvenile and formulaic, Down Periscope is also entertaining and a lot of fun.
EXCELLENT movie if you're one of those that loves "military fails" type of hilarity with a side of success when it counts.
I forgot how hot Lauren Holly was back in the 90s.Picket Fences was one of my favourite shows as a teen Lauren Holly as Deputy Sheriff was one of the reasons.
Original solutions to escape from a nuclear submarine.
