[Cannes '23] Through his four central characters, the director develops a visualization of recent Congolese history, and a mixture of cultures that has to do with the use of colors for each of them, incorporating elements of Mardi Grass in New Orleans and the Gilles parade in Belgium. Baloji crafts a fantastical tale that feels less focused the further away from the main couple. The director risks with an enriching and diverse proposal, which is more visually striking than narratively ordered, like a brainstorm that cannot find a way to organize itself around a clear structure.
