A subdued absurd comedy and political allegory, as was custom to pass Soviet censorship. The sad nostalgic look back at the Soviet Union while questioning the official version of Russian history but still maintaining the romanticism of the collectivist national spirit with the realisation that all of this is about to end. My take is that it is the zeitgeist of perestroika for intellectuals living through it. And titties for comfort.
