Beautiful and full of heart! Simple, familiar concept but so well executed. It's *Cast Away* mixed with *Avatar* and shades of *Planet of the Apes* (Maurice where were you?). Very good dosage between feel good and tragedy, had a smile on my face most of the time but I also had tears in my eyes twice (the little turtles scene for some reason and especially the ending). There's a language barrier that's never really broken so not much dialogue but actions speak louder than words here and so many touching moments with the wild life as well. Beautiful message! I wasn't sold on the animation at first (the eyes are too simple for starters) but I got past it once we start getting some stunning background art on the island. Nice fascinating architecture with the tree house, couldn't get enough of that. Satisfying pacing and effective score. Those last few minutes are so emotional.
Although it's not a film that leaves a deep impression, it is told with both simplicity and effectiveness. A tale about the sense of community, an idea of family in its broadest and almost spiritual meaning, and solidarity. With excellent music by Stuart Hancock, which becomes important in numerous sequences almost without dialogue, it addresses themes such as the trauma of war and atomic bombs to build a complex character to which Ken Watanabe's voice adds depth. It has the ability to find the balance between a story for young people but with a background for adult viewers.
