Ivo van Hove wasted a good play and fine performers. Ripped out of it's time period, and it's context, a fine cast have a hard time pulling this play back from a fatal trajectory. The stage design was minimalistic and bleak. The directed staging of the actors undermined the emotional intensity of the scenes (why would van Hove chose to leave a character on set for most of the play with no purpose in furthering the story or setting a tone?). This director forces the works he produces into unnecessarily awkward contortions of themselves. I give this play (despite the splendid Ruth WIlson) a 4 (poor) out of 10.
