This is a genre-spanning tale that settles into a Drama about a struggling farm family and the dangerous lengths they go to in an attempt to keep their land. There is some suspense here, mostly concerning whether they will get into trouble for their outrageous plan. To call this a Thriller or a Horror story is a stretch. There's no nail-biting tension or scares and the elements of Fantasy mixed into this movie make it very frustrating at times. If this movie were weird for weirdness sake, it would have made it more palatable. It's just odd and disjointed. A drama like this makes me want to grasp onto someone to pull for. It tried to play the tired Rich people vs. Poor people card, but made the poor farm family dysfunctional and cruel. The rich land buyer was actually sympathetic. It seems like a lot of movies make the villains more interesting than the heroes, but farmers as bad guys here is strange. It doesn't help that the ending is vague, either.
Enjoyable, lyrical thriller. The kind of film Terence Malick could make if he took his head out of his ass for a few minutes.
