A man is suspected of a crime he did not commit. He must flee from the authorities to find the real culprit. Along the way, he meets a woman, and everything culminates in a showdown at a famous American monument. The description makes it clear: “Saboteur” is unmistakably a film by Alfred Hitchcock and also obviously the spiritual predecessor to “North by Northwest.” From today's perspective, the film does have its sluggish parts, but overall, the mix of suspense, melodrama, and a bit of humor worked well for me. Hitchcock also demonstrates his creativity in his choice of locations and cinematic style. Saboteur is definitely still very watchable today, which is not a given for films from the 1940s.
