Tops in Terror!
In 1840s London, Dr. Thomas Bolton [Boris Karloff] dares to dream the unthinkable: experimenting with anesthesia gases to make surgery pain-free. While doing so, his demonstration before a panel of his peers ends in a horrific mishap with his patient awakening under the knife; he is forced to leave his position in disgrace. To complicate matters, he becomes addicted to his own chemical experiments and gets involved with a criminal gang led by Black Ben [Francis de Wolff], and a ruthless killer Resurrection Joe [Christopher Lee]. Unfortunately, this shady partnership leads Dr. Bolton to further ruin, culminating in his unwitting participation in murder — for which he becomes the first victim of a blackmail scheme.

Overlooked Burke & Hare/Medical experiment thriller. Well, it doesn't have Burke or Hare in it, but I think of all these body snatching/killing for science stories as Burke & Hare stories. It's interesting how popular this kind of story was/is. Plays a bit better in Britain I think, but it's interesting how despite the continuing legacy of Jack the Ripper, for example, Burke & Hare constitute little more than a cultural footnote nowadays (at least here in the states). The period setting is very well done, almost lavish. I think this had a relatively low budget, but you'd never know by looking at it. Great atmospheric black and white photography. Also features an early blink-and-you'll-miss-him appearance from Nigel Green.
