this is the third time I have attempted watching this and this time I managed to get all the way through. I'm never sure about Renoir. He made masterpieces but also a fair bit of rubbish. But this is one of his better films. Basically a twist on the noir genre. Framing and mise en scene were great as you'd expect from the son of one of the most famous painters ever, But I wasn't too interested in the story. And all these noir type films are so similarly plotted it's hard to distinguish them from each other. Recommended. An easy starting point for Renoir but nowhere near his best.
It could be considered black cinema with trains. Great movie that I had not seen before with the great Jean Gavin
