_Tales_ is a very different true crime documentary because of its focus on local characters who lived within the world of the killer. Instead of making one of the worst serial killers in American history into some kind of hero or mythic boogeyman, Broomfield shows us that Lonnie Franklin was a "regular person" and that "regular people" can commit the worst crimes. Moreover, this film delves into the completely underrepresented history of missing and murdered black women. We live in a system where women of color disappear all of the time and police call them "prostitutes".
