Bela Lugosi stars in the Universal Horror film _Murders in the Rue Morgue_. Adapted from the Edgar Allen Poe novel, the story follows a mad scientist named Dr. Mirakle who’s secretly conducting blood experiments on women and killing them, which soon draws the attention of young medical student. Lugosi gives a strong performance, and the film does an impressive job at making Mirakle’s ape henchman quiet frightening through its use of shadow and quick cuts. However, the writing is a little weak; leaving Dr. Mirakle’s motives and experiments rather vague. Yet despite its weaknesses, _Murder in the Rue Morgue_ is an entertaining and chilling thriller.
