Make sure you watch the one specifically titled "The Thief and the Cobbler", and not "The Princess and the Cobbler" or "Arabian Nights" or any of the other censored and localized abortions created from the original masterpiece. The story of the making of this movie is almost more interesting than the movie itself. I recommend watching the Channel Awesome/Nostalgia Critic review of it on YouTube.

I watched the "recobbled" version on YouTube. The voice work by Vincent Price was great, but the standout were the COMPLETED animation sequences. While difficult to get through some of the half animated sequences when you are distracted thinking what could be, you need to put that aside. However, the story itself is a little uninspired and not quite up to the standards of Disney or Pixar. The animation, however, is absolutely insane and beautiful. Worth watching for those.

I saw the remade workprint. So more than half the scenes are unfinished. Some only missing finishing touches, some being only roughly drawn or animated, missing textures and/or colours, to even some being just a few storyboard images with the voices. This is really sad because this is full of ideas, at every level; characters, story, style, animation, gags... It is unclear how much Disney was inspired by that for Aladdin. It had been a work in progress for decades, but was only released first in 93, so after Aladdin. But wow, is the Vizir close to Jafar (with a bit of Genie in it). The Sultan has a similar vibe too, so does the princess. At the animation level, it's incredible for the time it was started (probably what caused it to be later, over budged and to eventually be abandoned). The chase in the beginning, where the geometric shapes of the ground and walls end up becoming perspective change traps, is incredible. Something very original is the title characters. Both are mute and one is even unnamed. They aren't the driving force of the story, as they basically do nothing. The thief is just a permanent series of gags. He's trying, and failing, to steal stuff, mostly in absurd ways (think Coyote trying to kill roadrunner, but without any intelligent planning). All the time. This provokes some of the events and leads him to interact somehow with the other characters, but rather indirectly. His gags are pretty stupid but original and work extremely well. Trying to enter the castle through pipes. The polo ball that constantly follows him. Finding the right pole size to steal the golden balls. Etc. Tack, the cobbler, is pretty useless, despite being basically the hero, he almost does nothing. He fixes the princess' shoe. He escape from prison. Has some chases with the thief. Shoots one tack at the end. The vizir would be the most active character. This is basically Disney's Jafar, he even has the pet bird. He only speaks in alexandrines which is quite fun. The big battle at the end, if it can be called that, was an incredible original and complex scene, where Tack only shoots one tac, and follows a chain reaction that destroys the whole army, mixed with the thief managing to steal back the balls while constantly miraculously avoiding death. However, first I don't know if this was a finished scene or not. It's all in black and red, lacking details, which could be a stylistic choice or not. And mainly it's too much. This goes on for... I don't know exactly... 15 minutes ? It's funny in the first two, but boy did it go to far... Still, really a pity that this was not completed as intended, it would have been revolutionary.
