Putting the ‘dark’ back in the Dark Ages.
Mikolás and his brother Adam end up with a young German hostage of noble blood during a robbery. While their clan prepares for the wrath of the German king, Mikolás is sent to pressure his neighbor Lazar into a defense pact. Persuasion fails and he abducts Lazar's daughter Marketa on the eve of her initiation as a nun in an act of vengeance.

I wanted to like this way more than I did. Difficult for me to find a way in, and struggled to follow at times--Vlacil has a weird tendency to place the speaker in a scene off-camera or facing away, such that it was sometimes difficult to tell who was talking. Not a good plan for a narrative this opaque. Some beautiful shots throughout, but not enough to overcome my bias against dour, brutal stories in the Dark Ages.
