[5.75/10] As a lifelong fan of _The Wizard of Oz_ starring Judy Garland, I was curious to see how I’d feel about _The Wiz_. I have to say, I really enjoyed parts of it! The music was impressive, though every number felt a bit too long—much like the film itself. That said, I loved the new environment and atmosphere, and I appreciated the small callbacks to the original movie. And those perfectly fitted shoes were so cute on Diana Ross. The film had some pretty creepy moments, especially early on when Dorothy first arrives in Oz. Also, the subway scene, where the pillars come to life, was one of my favorites! I also found it interesting that the story touches on more mature personal struggles, which makes the G rating a bit surprising. But I actually think I would have liked it more had I seen it 30 years ago when I wouldn't have been able to understand that. Overall, it was just okay for me. Still, I have to give extra points for the sheer talent and effort that went into it. I think it was a pretty cool concept! Most of the people I’d recommend it to have probably already seen it multiple times.

Too long and not very appealing.

We should welcome the idea of completely revamping “The Wizard of Oz” as a musical with an all-African American cast and giving the whole thing a decent budget as a film. However, I didn't like the execution of “The Wiz” at all, as the songs aren't catchy, the acting is weak, and the costumes are rather mixed. Furthermore, the film feels much too long as a result. Fortunately, there are much better works in the world of Oz.

A classic movie. Took me back to my childhood days.
