What a strange little film. It’s one that holds your attention with Ashley Judd and Ewan McGregor, because they’re great actors and compelling on screen, but both of their motivations are rocky at best and completely non-existent at worst. The parts with the daughter were interesting, and would have been more interesting if they played with that more. I love a good unreliable narrator but they kind of gave up the ghost before it could even go anywhere. And the blood and violence is visually striking and edgy and thrilling but the source for it is never really explained. This could have played a lot more on the thriller aspect but just kind of fizzled out whenever it got good. It’s very stylish, with creative transitions between the video surveillance to real life, the depictions of violence, the bell tower, the daughter appearing where she does. But it lacks coherence and feels very disjointed. All it really needed was a proper foundation and motivations for the main characters. Also all the numerology/astrology stuff could have definitely leant to the thriller aspect, could have added a touch of surrealism, but in the end it didn’t do much of anything. It felt like I was waiting for the connecting pieces and they never came.
