Well that was… a film. I like football and I like Ian McShane, so I gave this a go. A lot of moments made me laugh, unintentionally: Jon Motson turning up as himself, the Englishness of a lot of the names of the players (‘Tony Hatch’, ‘John Snatcher’) the names of the teams (‘Leicester Forest’, amazing), love how all his mates are 80. Incredibly, they manage to make Ian McShane, who’s a good-looking fella, look fucking horrible. I also love how it makes you realise how unglamorous the 70s were. His bedsit is the grottiest fucking shit-tip I’ve ever seen. It’s worse than Mr Bean’s. Pete Doherty wouldn’t even stay there. And they really want to hammer home the fact that he’s clearly an alcoholic by having him swig whiskey in every other scene. The acting is bad, there’s a plethora of unnecessary scenes, and the scriptwriting is terrible — after about half an hour I started trying to guess the next line and was right so often it was remarkable. Awful, but sort of compelling
