In Jacmel, Haiti, the sea, the churches, and the spirits shape daily life. Marie Madeleine is a free woman. She makes a living as a prostitute and navigates the nights without submitting to the rules of those who save souls. Her path crosses Joseph's, a young evangelist. A relationship blossoms between these two opposite beings. As Joseph’s faith wavers, Marie Madeleine draws him into a world where desire and the quest for freedom open up a space where everything can be reinvented.
Avis de la communauté (1)
[Cannes '26] A rather vibrant representation of a Haitian people that the director defines as "living in several dimensions at once," with a particular way of facing the daily adversities that constantly surround them, from political corruption to the situation of the queer community, political instability, the chaos of public institutions, or the consequences of a past that transmits echoes of the ancestors are present in one way or another throughout a film that places its characters at the narrative center, but surrounds them with an environment that is so hostile that it finds comfort in the exalted diatribes of Protestant influence that is limited to predicting damnation and the end of the world brought about by the sin of unbridled desire.
