[Cannes '26] Director Kohei Kadowaki delivers one of those rare examples of truly auteur-driven animation, with character designs that are sometimes unsettling, to tell a story of heartbreak that manages to convey emotion from the perspective of survival, growth, and the painful experience of losing the friendship between two young people. Contributing to this unique tone are the almost constant presence of rain, the introduction of a certain science-fiction-like approach, and the overhead shots that show the characters from an unusual perspective, like an unreal reflection of the events they are experiencing.
