As a huge RHCP fan (since Mother’s Milk), this was so good. Needless to say, I cried.

The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel offers some genuinely interesting background on one of the most chaotic and unique bands in music history. Focusing on Hillel Slovak adds an emotional layer and gives context to the early identity of the band, which longtime fans will definitely appreciate. It’s not the most polished or compelling documentary throughout, and it doesn’t fully dive as deep as it could in certain areas, which holds it back a bit. But there’s still enough here — stories, history, and raw energy — to make it a worthwhile watch, especially if you’re already interested in the band. I didn’t love it, but I’m glad I watched it. Rating: 3/5 – 75% – Worth Watching

I have a strange relationship with the Chili Peppers – I don’t consider myself a fan but I’ve listened to most of their albums, actively resenting most of their tunes – but I can’t deny my love for Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I enjoyed this doc though, which is all the better for refusing to bloat into a typical Netflix multi-part docuseries and instead clocking in at a tight 90-ish minutes to cover the band’s first six-ish years, leaning hard into the origin myth and the dumb luck of letting Kiedis near a mic and accidentally inventing whatever the hell that was. The AI-voiced journal readings for Hillel are… a choice, but watching Flea choke up absolutely got me both times, which I didn’t expect. It smartly downplays the actual music at key moments, as if it knows that hearing too much of it might puncture the emotional narrative it’s trying to build, which feels correct. But yeah it’s quite impressive really that a group of musicians this talented and exciting (+ one idiot) managed to churn out as much shite as they have over the years. I think they have a shout for being the greatest bad rock band of all time? Or the worst great rock band? Uh huh

So good! A must watch! Very informative and a necessity if you love RHCP!… had to watch it twice and binge Live at Slane!
