The second film I have seen by Luis Estrada after watching the masterpiece El Infierno (2011) a few weeks ago. And this is another excellent film. Highly controversial when it was made as it was an attack on Mexico's ruling party and it directly mentions them by name. The government did everything they could to try to suppress it. They tried to ban it, pull it from festivals etc. It is a film about a foolish party member who is appointed to Mayor of a corrupt and murderous town. He is chosen because he is so easy to control. It's a satire. A Comedy. And it's awesome. It isn't laugh out loud funny but it very amusing and engages you every minute of the running time. Much like El Infierno, it is shot beautifully, is sympathetic to characters who aren't exactly the nicest people in the world and just a super enjoyable experience overall. Not quite as good as El Infierno, but not too far away. Oh and Herod's Law means 'kill or be killed'. Obviously it comes from the bible. Can't quite decide on 3.5 or 4.
