It is very different from his other films. And even if there is nothing specially original - brutally dead people that haunt others to commit some more murders, been there, seen that - it looks like Yerzhanov is as comfortable with the (mostly) psychological horror genre as with his more usual tough guy getting revenge style. (Not that it's all that is done, he's really trying a bit of everything, his comedy was quite good too.) The slow distilling of horror elements, the general ambiance, it's pretty much on point. Maybe a tad too slow and 15-20 minutes too long though. A funny (in my opinion, maybe not intended, I don't know) twist of the genre is that the issue is identified almost at the beginning, they then even talk to the possessing entity quite early (giving historical details of its identity, and affirming that yes they need to kill more) , and yet the mother and cop are all like, well, let's see how this plays out, "I can make voices too". The story though, was a bit of a mess. For instance I'm not quite clear whether there was actual demon worship involved or if the collusion between the principal, journalists and other guys was just regular corruption. There were maybe too many threads put together. That and the slowness made it a bit confusing, I think I disconnected at some point. A good enough one in the end.
