Good, solid, well-made film that I liked when it was on but immediately started picking at on the way home. It’s tight, funny in places, and absolutely whizzes by but my main issue is how weak it makes Mick look, when I’m not convinced that really was the dynamic. Like, Coogan is good but also a bit of a problem. Sometimes he’s excellent and restrained and sometimes he drifts into full Partridge mode which slightly undercuts what should be a more evenly matched power struggle. Him being noticeably smaller and much older than Keane doesn’t help either. It starts to feel less like two stubborn professionals at war and more like one man bullying another, which flattens the ambiguity the film otherwise wants. “It’d be better if we had footballs” is a perfectly delivered line though. And Hardwicke is an eerily good Keane. Also worth saying: the soundtrack is tremendous. Pogues, Stone Roses, Dylan, Fontaines. Me likey
