When they needed hope, he gave them great expectations.
As a war rages on in the province of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea, a young girl becomes transfixed by the Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations, which is being read at school by the only white man in the village.

There is hope in the film, but it's a long road getting there. Hugh Laurie is magnificent as Mr Watts, bringing the tale of Mr Pip into the lives of those living with war and bloodshed, proving especially resonant for one young girl. Tears of anguish are replaced by tears of joy; this is an emotional rollercoaster that, like any great work of literature, educates and teaches rather than manipulates the soul.
