Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is fun, clever, and entertaining, but I didn’t find it as great as its reputation suggests. It thrives on awkward encounters, real-world unpredictability, and freedom from structure. Many find this to be its charm, but it does come at a cost. There’s an objective floating in the background, yet the film never organizes itself around pursuing it in a focused way. Characters react more than they progress. I can’t criticize these choices, but I don’t entirely connect with them either.

When one of their elaborate plans to get inside goes spectacularly wrong, they end up traveling back to 2008, turning a simple goal into a chaotic adventure. Going in with no knowledge of the original source material, I was drawn in by the overwhelmingly positive reviews — and it did not disappoint. The film is a delightfully offbeat comedy, packed with clever uses of flashbacks that heighten both the absurdity and the payoff of its jokes. Filmed throughout Toronto, including some scenes shot without permits, the movie captures a raw, authentic view of the city, featuring obscure and unexpected locations that amplify the story’s manic energy. For Torontonians especially, it’s a fun, must-see ride.

This movie is a goddamn blast and speaks to me on a deep level

I wanted to like this film much more than I ultimately did. I enjoyed the premise, but the delivery often felt like a skit that went on way, way, way too long. The ironic part about this comedy is that I thought that the best parts of the film were the dramatic parts with Jay in the middle.
