If they really had to remake Psycho; then they should have just adapted the book more closely. With Norman older and Marion's head cut off in the shower. Otherwise a shot by shot remake is just a waste of our time and Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting) only testing his abilities as a filmmaker. Just because Sant was nominated the previous year; I guess he thought that meant he was as good as Hitchcock. The casting is just awful. Vince Vaughn looks lost on what to do with the part of Norman. Anne Heche looks just as lost on what to do with Marion. The rest of the cast does better but are mostly mis-cast as well. Just stick with the original. I am sure it was fun to make at least.

It's an interesting experiment in film, but ends up being totally pointless. It's not offensive to the legacy of the original, but it adds nothing to it. An ill advised test.

Perhaps the most literal remake ever made, director Gus Van Sant delivers a shot-by-shot remake of _Psycho_. It’s not an exact copy, but it’s fairly close. Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche, Julianne Moore, and Viggo Mortensen form a solid cast, but their performances are a little odd and unnatural. Something about the filmmaking style clashes with the modern setting, and the film seems somewhat self-aware of what it’s doing. Still, the storytelling works and creates a compelling mystery with interesting characters. While Gus Van Sant’s remake doesn’t recapture the brilliance of the original _Psycho_, the power and allure of the material still comes through.

Honestly, the only reason I checked out this remake was for Vince Vaughn's performance, especially seeing him as "Mother." For the sheer laughs of that concept alone, it was worth the watch! However, the movie itself was a huge disappointment. It just can't hold a candle to the original. The remake felt completely pointless and flat compared to Hitchcock's masterful film.

I just finished Psycho (1998), and while I haven’t seen the original, I can say this version was good, but not great. The story itself holds up well—there’s a reason Psycho is a classic. Some parts were intense but I did not get the thrill I had been anticipating. Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates was an interesting choice.
