This movie was desperately seeking an Oscar. It has everything so beautiful that it feels fake. The music is great and the story is good too but what happened to all the social disturbs that were happening and that Motown just avoided? If they had included that part this movie would have been amazing. Jennifer Hudson is an amazing singer and actress, she deserved the Oscar she won.
Totally not my kind of music and the story wasn't that great. But it paints a good picture of the era and what it ment to be a black musician. If they had focused more on that I might have liked it more. So, very subjective rating. If you like the music you probably will enjoy the movie.
The story is entertaining yet predictable, but the music is absolutely legendary, elevating this particular musical to heights only titles like Grease or The Wizard of Oz have reached. Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson are mesmerising.
The performances and music are definitely the reason to watch this. Some parts feel a little too dramatic, but when the songs start going, the movie really comes alive.
I am a big fan of musical biopics and this cast is superb. While this does not stand atop the genre in any way, the plot and music is good enough to make this a very enjoyable experience. Rating: 3.5/5 - 80% - Would Recommend
