It’s refreshing to see a Mexican film that truly feels like cinema. Every year, plenty of Mexican films come out that look like cheap episodes of a TV series. Visually, this one is stunning. The party/funeral scene near the end is incredible. Some productions, in their effort to showcase beauty, end up looking like tourism ads, but here we see the ugly, dusty, abandoned, decayed, and ghostly side of Comala without losing any of its beauty. It’s such a rare thing. I think this is the best-produced Mexican film I’ve seen. It would be amazing if this visual quality stopped being a rarity and became the norm. On the other hand, there’s the acting. I can’t even get my cats to stay still for a photo, so maybe it’s unfair to say that Prieto still lacks experience as a director… but that’s how it felt. Was it too ambitious to debut as a director with a classic of national literature? Maybe. Perhaps a short film or a couple of shorts based on a story from El Llano en llamas would have been better. I don’t know. It was an interesting experiment and a visual delight I didn’t expect.
When I learned that the film was a book adaptation, when I found the novel on the internet and started reading it, the traces of the fantastic realist movement were very clear. G.G. Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude also made its taste felt. After reading 50 pages, even the first 20 minutes were exhausting to watch. They filmed it almost verbatim. There is a very exaggerated narration, so it is like a dream. You need to focus on the film separately. In fact, it's best to read the plot of the movie and deal with that mindset. I just wanted to watch it because the genre of the movie was great. Because it's my favorite kind. It was neither very good nor very bad, it was a production below the general average. Still, good luck with your endeavors.
Boring, Boring, please do not waste your Time and read the book
Just well done, Perfectly built, a mesurate translation of the book, shocking and impressive.
