A cantankerous widower (Garner) who is virtually living the life of a recluse is forced to rejoin his community when his Godchild (Skaggs) gets in trouble and a childhood friend (Cobbs), a black tenant farmer, refuses to belatedly accept a Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery in World War II.

Rarely do I see movies well written and well played which demonstrate such love and respect for all characters portrayed. This movie hits that mark. Genuine dilemmas of heart and character addressed without cheap virtue-signaling or high minded social justice. Prejudices are exposed as character choices individuals make and resolved individually.
