House of the Dragon season 2 continues a recent Hollywood trend (as mentioned in my reviews for The Boys Season 4 and The Bear Season 3) of writers padding out a season to kick the can down the road and prolong a show that should probably be starting to resolve arcs. Consequences and payoff to the season long build-up are deferred to the next season, and instead, we get very repetitive scenes that move the plot in circles or just kill time. The most obvious offender is Daemon's arc which manages to kill any momentum every time it appears on screen, constantly being repetitive, before ending up at a moment that somehow feels completely unearned despite the amount of screentime it eats up. This poor writing is the key issue with this season. It's okay if the season lacks constant action and battle sequences. The issue isn't a slower and more methodical pace, but rather the lack of progress both in terms of plot as well as character. We continue to get the same setup for character conflicts in multiple episodes without any real sense of growth regardless of which character we follow. The politics are very poorly defined, with the different allies and politicking not really having any weight to them because so much of it ends up revolving around the different councils, all of which are stuck in a Groundhog Day approach to their inner workings. The strength of either side never feels palpable, with only characters telling us who has the momentum for us to understand (because honestly, it seems like only one side is doing things correctly). And yes, all the nuance you'd expect from this universe is stripped out as the sides feel fairly binary in terms of which one is considered the "good" and the "bad". And when events finally occur, the consequences of those events are quickly forgotten. Slow, dialogue-heavy, character-driven writing that doesn't always move the ball forward is forgivable, but this poorly written, repetitive, circular season is not that. It's a clear demonstration of trying to milk a property and extend a show that should have been 3 seasons into 4. Sometimes less is more, and no amount of strong acting and cinematography can make up for this season's limp, insipid lack of momentum.

Blah blah blah followed by more blah blah blah.. Plenty of pointless and useless talking and virtually no action at all. These people are never going to war when you can talk your enemies into killing themselves just so they don't have to listen to you!!! 2/10 ( 2 for the dragon CGI)

It's hard to know what exactly went wrong here. Maybe it's the strikes from last year. Maybe it's HBO replacing the original showrunner. Maybe it's WB not having the money or time to create 10 proper episodes. Or maybe it's a little bit of everything. Regardless, it's pretty obvious that the quality took a bit of a nosedive this season. A lot of the writing felt repetitive and the execution of some key events was very questionable. I particularly think about the attack with the twin guard or Rhaenyra/Allicent meeting up in King's Landing, all that stuff was so silly and awkwardly directed. When looking at this season as a whole, it feels underwhelming and incomplete to me. The two major moments were alright but kinda lacking compared the big sequences of season 1. I think it really needed to show the event that's promised by the season finale, because now it feels too much like I've only seen 8 hours of set-up for the next season. Still, it's way too well made to call any of this terrible. In terms of production values and cinematography it's still way better than most of the stuff we see at the multiplex. The acting and complex character work remains beautiful and nuanced. If Emma D'arcy didn't quite convince you in season 1, they most definitely will here. Overall, while I don't think the show has reached a point of no return and can potentially bounce back from here, maybe it's time for HBO to consider another creative overhaul. You don't want to repeat the same mistake as the later seasons of _Game of Thrones_ by losing any sense of intricacy. 5/10

A very underwhelming season, the pacing will make me not recommend it to anyone. There are things that get dragged on for so long and then there's some stuff that you feel gets rushed. HBO is milking the success of the first season otherwise we'd have seen a proper 10 episodes season and not 8 episodes for just 32 pages of the source material. And can we not cast YouTubers in the show? The actor playing Lohar was terrible!
